ESV Translation Philosophy

The ESV is an “essentially literal” translation that seeks as far as possible to reproduce the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer. As such, its emphasis is on “word-for-word” correspondence, at the same time taking full account of differences in grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages. Thus it seeks to be transparent to the original text, letting the reader see as directly as possible the structure and exact force of the original.

In contrast to the ESV, some Bible versions have followed a “thought-for-thought” rather than “word-for-word” translation philosophy, emphasizing “dynamic equivalence” rather than the “essentially literal” meaning of the original. A “thought-for-thought” translation is of necessity more inclined to reflect the interpretive views of the translator and the influences of contemporary culture.

Every translation is at many points a trade-off between literal precision and readability, between “formal equivalence” in expression and “functional equivalence” in communication, and the ESV is no exception. Within this framework, we have sought to be “as literal as possible” while maintaining clarity of expression and literary excellence. Therefore, to the extent that plain English permits and the meaning in each case allows, we have sought to use the same English word for important recurring words in the original; and, as far as grammar and syntax allow, we have rendered Old Testament passages cited in the New in ways that show their correspondence. Thus in each of these areas, as well as throughout the Bible as a whole, we have sought to capture all the echoes and overtones of meaning that are so abundantly present in the original texts.

As an essentially literal translation, taking into account grammar and syntax, the ESV thus seeks to carry over every possible nuance of meaning in the original words of Scripture into our own language. As such, the ESV is ideally suited for in-depth study of the Bible. Indeed, with its commitment to literary excellence, the ESV is equally well suited for public reading and preaching, for private reading and reflection, for both academic and devotional study, and for Scripture memorization.

THIS WEEK’S INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT BY SISTER CLOVIA

PUTTING GOD FIRST! – Inspirational Thought By Sister Clovia – 11 10 2024

PUTTING GOD FIRST!

The November Topic for the Our Daily Bread is Seeking God First.  Each Friday, the devotionals are on this topic.

Let’s be honest: Everyone has priorities that, most of the time, take up a majority of our mind space.  We arrange our schedules, budgets, and relationships according to what is important to us.  Where have you placed God in your life equation? Is He first, last, in the middle, when you get around to it, or nowhere?

We must understand that a commitment to put God first means we prioritize Him over everything. I mean, everything.

God is the principal figure in our lives and central to everything we do and think. When we choose to put Him first, we determine He is more important than any other person, place, or thing and that His Word is more valuable than any other message.

Putting God first means keeping the greatest commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” based on Matthew 22:37.  In other words, we are totally invested in our relationship with God.  Everything “we have” and “everything we are” is devoted to Him.

Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:33 to “seek the Kingdom of God above all else.”  In practical terms, we are to seek the things of God over the things of the world.  We are to seek salvation, considering that our soul is of greater value than all the world’s riches.  We will stand out from the rest of the world’s ways, obey God’s commands, take up our cross (die to self), and follow Jesus.

Let’s put God first regardless of the trials you face.  No matter how difficult the situation. Be in love with God.  Be excited about Him. Spend uninterrupted time with God. Be humbled to Him. Listen to God. Talk to Him. Develop an unwavering faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and entrust yourself to Him in all areas of your life.

To God Be All The Glory, Amen, Amen.
