ESV Translation Philosophy

The ESV is an “essentially literal” translation that seeks as far as possible to reproduce the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer. As such, its emphasis is on “word-for-word” correspondence, at the same time taking full account of differences in grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages. Thus it seeks to be transparent to the original text, letting the reader see as directly as possible the structure and exact force of the original.

In contrast to the ESV, some Bible versions have followed a “thought-for-thought” rather than “word-for-word” translation philosophy, emphasizing “dynamic equivalence” rather than the “essentially literal” meaning of the original. A “thought-for-thought” translation is of necessity more inclined to reflect the interpretive views of the translator and the influences of contemporary culture.

Every translation is at many points a trade-off between literal precision and readability, between “formal equivalence” in expression and “functional equivalence” in communication, and the ESV is no exception. Within this framework, we have sought to be “as literal as possible” while maintaining clarity of expression and literary excellence. Therefore, to the extent that plain English permits and the meaning in each case allows, we have sought to use the same English word for important recurring words in the original; and, as far as grammar and syntax allow, we have rendered Old Testament passages cited in the New in ways that show their correspondence. Thus in each of these areas, as well as throughout the Bible as a whole, we have sought to capture all the echoes and overtones of meaning that are so abundantly present in the original texts.

As an essentially literal translation, taking into account grammar and syntax, the ESV thus seeks to carry over every possible nuance of meaning in the original words of Scripture into our own language. As such, the ESV is ideally suited for in-depth study of the Bible. Indeed, with its commitment to literary excellence, the ESV is equally well suited for public reading and preaching, for private reading and reflection, for both academic and devotional study, and for Scripture memorization.

THIS WEEK’S INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT BY SISTER CLOVIA

IS PRAYER ESSENTIAL? – Inspirational Thought By Sister Clovia – 10 06 2024

IS PRAYER ESSENTIAL?

Prayer is just as essential for the child of God in the spiritual realm as breathing is for us in the natural. Without it, God cannot move on our behalf.  Scripture has much to say about this vital subject.  James 5:16 says, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Does it work? It surely does!

Here are a few biblical examples of the power of prayer:

  • The angel blessed him as Jacob prayed, transforming Esau’s desire for revenge into love. — Genesis 32-34
  • When Moses prayed, the Amalekites became discomfited, and Israel triumphed. — Exodus 17:11-13
  • After Joshua prayed, the day became longer, leading to a victory. — Joshua 10:12-14
  • David repented and prayed to God for forgiveness. God forgave him, and David went out to win others to the Lord. — 2 Samuel 12:13-23
  • Elijah prayed, and shortly after, a tiny cloud appeared, bringing rain and ending the famine. — 1 Kings 18:41-19:8
  • Hezekiah offered a prayer, and the sundial turned back ten steps, granting him an extension on his life. — Isaiah 38:8
  • Daniel prayed, and the lions lost their hunger. — Daniel 6:16-23
  • As the disciples prayed, the Holy Spirit released upon them and shook the meeting place. — Acts 4:31
  • The Church prayed while Peter was in prison awaiting trial. An angel of the Lord appeared before Peter, released his shackles, and then walked Peter out of the prison. — Acts 12:5-17
  • Paul and Silas sang and prayed to God. Suddenly, an earthquake shook the prison’s foundation and opened the cell doors, allowing the prisoners and the Philippian jailer to walk out. — Acts 16:25-34

Prayer is not a privilege reserved for a few but a gift for all. Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”Matthew 7:7-8. This scripture is a promise for each of us, a reminder of the accessibility of prayer.

Remember these to help you or someone else:

ASAP = Always Say A Prayer
PUSH = Pray Until Something Happens
FOG = Focus On God
SOS = Seek, Open, Surrender

Prayer is always FREE, and His door is always OPEN!
